Style Mapping

For the three styles to describe, I have chosen Stardust by Neil Gaiman, Revolution by Jennifer Donnely, and The Mud Below by Annie Proulx.

The first is a very boring, repetative, yet blunt in description essay. It states the town of Wall like it is, and the author doesn't use any fancy words to describe the gray granite. He suggests to what kind of people live there and how they act, but he mainly focus' on the town description itself. This exerpt is written in common language that almost all people would understand. The passage has a calm feeling to it, like you were taking a stroll through the woods on a summer afternoon.

The second exerpt is from the first page of a book I have been reading recently. Jennifer Donnely suggests character's clothing style which helps us picture the personality. She doesn't use fancy words, but more common adjectives with a few economical terms and phrases thrown in to the mix. These describe one of the characters to be scholarly. Donnely also likes to use metaphors in her writing and description.

Lastly, the third paragraph I have chosen is an exciting paragraph. The author plays on emotions of adrenaline and excitement to help advance the dialogue that describes the 'cowboy' character. Proulx has a wide variety of verbs used to describe the situation as eventful and fast-paced in the way that the bull is being handled and how the bull rider is getting ready for his turn, sitting in the chute.
